Vicky's Third Scribe

Today in class, I volunteered to do a scribe post for this month on algebra test number 2.
This is what the Algebra Test 2 looks like.
Algebra Test 2
Write the following expressions in words.
1. 2x-9 = two times a number decreased by (less, reduce, take away, etc.) nine.
2. 10-4x = ten decreased by (reduce, and decreased ONLY) four times a number.
3. 5 (x-8) = a number less (decreased, take away, etc.) than eight times five.
4. 7(x+5) = a number plus (increased, and, sum of, etc.) five times seven

Write the following statements as algebraic expressions
5. 6 centimeters more than two thirds of lenth x = 2/3 n + 6cm
6. three times the sum of a number and two = 3 (n+2)
7. nine decreased by two times a number = 9-2n
8. four less than five times a number = 5n-4

The following graph shows the first four terms of a pattern.

A) Create a chart that shows the first 10 terms of the pattern.

B) Write the algebraic expression for the relationship between the hours spent walking and the number of kilometers walked.
4n - 1
y is km walked
x is hours
C) Using your algebraic expression, determine how far they could walk after 50 hours.
4n-1
4 x 50 huors - 1 = 199 km

What I Know About Rectangular Prisms

Rectangular Prism, also known as Cuboid (the shape), is a solid 3D (3-dimensional) object which has six faces, Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Front and Back. Each opposite faces of a rectangular prism are equal, for example Top is equal to Bottom, Left Side is equal to Right Side, and Front is equal to Back.

A Net is a disasemble box, or an open box. Its very usefull when you want to find the area of each faces.

This is an old voice thread that I have used on my second scribe post. Yes, I have finally changed it to public, sorry for the technical difficulties~. Teeehheeee.
How to find the volume of a rectangular prism.

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Jonah's bob

What I know and learned about rectangular prisms:
We learned about getting the Surface Area and Volume of rectangular prisms. But the step we always do is making a Net.
Surface Area:
There is a lot of work to do before you can actually find out the surface area. You have to find out the area of each of the shapes. The top, front, and the left side. You only need to find out only one of each shape because each one has a pair. The right and left sides, the front and back, and the top and bottom.

The formula for figuring out the top and bottom is LxW (length x width). Since you only need to find out one of each shape all you have to do is then multiply it by 2. So it would be lxwx2 to equal the answer with a exponent of 2 (squared). E.g 3cm x 2cm x 2 = 12 2 cm.

The formula for figuring out the sides is HxW (height x width). Again, since you only need to find out only one side all you have to do is multiply it by 2. So then it would be hxwx2 to equal the answer with an exponent of 2 (squared). E.g 6cm x 2cm x 2 = 24 2 cm.

The formula for figuring out the area for the front and back is HxL (height x length). Since you only have to find out one of the shapes all you have to do is multiply the first answer by 2. So then it would be hxlx2 to equal the answer with an exponent of 2 (squared). E.g 6cm x 3cm x 2 = 36 2 cm.

Then you add all the numbers to together to get the total surface area. The exponent for surface area is always 2.

Volume:
Figuring out the volume for a rectangular prism is some what harder that find the surface area. But in some ways it is easier because you are only figuring out what is the number of the inside of the shape. There are two formulas of finding the volume.

Area of the base x Width is one of the formulas. First you find out the measurement of the base. Then you multiply that by the width because that is how many base numbers you have. E.g Base number = 15 cm 2 and the width = 3 cm. So it would be 15 cm 2 x 3 cm= 45 cm 3.

The second formula is
LxHxW (length x height x width). You first find out the measurement of the length, width, and the height. Once you do then you multiply them all together. E.g L = 5 cm
H = 10 cm W= 3cm. 5cm x 10 cm x 3 cm = 150 cm
3.

The exponent for volume is always 3.

Davids BOB

What I have learned/know about rectangular prisms.
Rectangular prisms are 3 dimensional shapes, and in class we've learned how to find certain things about the rectangular prism. First of all, theres something called the Net, which is just like what the prism would look like if you made it flat.

The next thing would be the measurements of the prism, if you look at the net, you can use that to figure out what the length, width, and height of the prism is. You could switch those numbers around though, because any side of the prism could be the bottom or the base because if you were going to cut it it would be the same on each side. So for our prism lets say we have a length of 8cm, width of 5cm, and a hieght of 2cm.

We can use those measurements now to figure out the surface area of the prism, so how many square cm are in that net. Its kind of broken up into pieces, but the face of the prism thats on the opposite side will always be the same if we're dealing with rectangles and...stuff. First we would want to figure out how large the top, bottom, left side, right side, front and back are. Height x Length is how you would get the front or the back, you would have to multiply your answer by 2 to get the area of both the front and the back. Height x Width is how you get the right/left sides, also multiple by 2 to get the area of both sides. Length x Width, this is how you would find the area for the top or bottom, again, multiply by 2 to get the area for both, if it was a square then all of the sides would be the same so if you found one out you know the rest. When we've figured out the are of each face on the rectangular prism, we need to add them up to get the surface area of the whole prism. We could add each little thing up, or we can do something like this, 2(hxl)+ 2(hxw)+ 2(lxw)=Surface Area
So with our rectangle, the surface area would be something like this:

2cm x 8cm = 16cm x2 = 32cm squared

2cm x 5cm = 10cm x2 = 20cm squared

8cm x 5cm = 40cm x2 = 80cm squared

32cm2 +20cm2 +80cm2= 132cm2

Thats only one way of doing this, and its pretty simple too because we found the area for all the sides before we added them up.
We also learned how to find the volume!

There are two ways we could figure out the volume, one was multiply all of the measurments of a rectangular prism. By that I mean Length x Width x Height, not the cm squared but how many cm it was on the side of the rectangular prism. If the prism had a 8cm length, 5cm width, and a 2cm height, then we could do 8cm x 5cm x 2cm = 80cm cubed (we use a little 3 to represent cubed and we use it to know we're talking about something in 3 dimensions).

You could do the same thing with a cube except you would have different numbers for the length, width, and height. Another thing we could do is Base x Height, your base is usualy the width x length. This solution is a little different though, you can represent it in a different way. But you would find out what the base is first, so usuing the cube again, it would have a base of 40cm squared, multiplying that by the height (2cm) would get us our volume of 80cm cubed. It would look something like this if you wanted to draw it out.

Leta's Scribe

Today in class we....

Learned to do easier ways for dividing fractions...
Ex. 2/3 / 1 1/2 =?

Mr harbeck taught us....
That when its like that question ^ then we have to make it inproper.
(ex. 2/3 / 1 1/2 = 2/3 / 3/2) so when its like that we can make it inproper and it will be easier to do. so when you make it inproper if you find a pattern like this:

<--- See how they have both the same numbers!!! <--- Then you could change the denominator and put it in the oter fractions denominator. So then you would have 2/2 and 3/3. <--- Or you can just times the numerator and then since the denominator has the same numbers it will equal the same sum as the numerator. so if you times them you get 6/6 which equals 1.

Mr. Harbeck Learned And Taught Us.....

Mr. Harbeck learned and taught us that when you do a question like this:
2/3 /11/2 = 2/3 / 3/2
= 6/6=1 And when you do those kinds of questions you have to line up the first equal signs.. Mr harbeck learned this from Mr. Ralph

For homework we had....

Had to finish that piece of paper that Mr. Harbeck gave to us in class and give examples for rows 4 and 5. In row 3 we had to finish the questions. In colum 5 we had to show recipicals for the fractions he gave us. And for row 2 we had to explain how we did the questions in row 3.

Robby's Scribe Post

Today, we did a test on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions.

THE QUESTIONS WERE:
1 1/5 + 3 2/3 =

5 3/4 - 3 5/6 =

7/8 x 4/5 =

2 2/3 x 4 1/2 =

I answered the questions on Microsoft Pain
t -like application:

1 1/5 + 3 2/3=

For th
ose of you that CAN'T SEE, the writing under the question says: Now make Equivalent Fractions. FOr 1/5 and 2/3, they both go into 15. So multiply numerator of 1 by 3 and the numerator of 2/3 by 5. The denominator will be set at 15.
*Circled areas are answers or part answers.

5 3/4 - 3 5/6 =

STEPS I TOOK:
I (wife) swapped 3/4 and 5/6 to get 5/4 and 3/6. 3/6 is half and 5/4 = 1 1/4.(new question being 6 1/4 - 3 3/6.
Then, I turned 3/6 into 1/2 and did simple subtraction with the wholes. With the fractions, I turned 1/2 into 2/4 to have a common
denominator.
The question now is 6 1/4 - 3 2/4. But you can't subtract 2/4 from 1/4, so you need to BORROW a whole from 6 and add it to 4. 1 Whole is 4/4 for this question. So add 4 to 1 to get 5/4. Now you can subtract it with a proper fraction as the answer.

7/8 x 4/5 =
A much faster way to do this is just multiplying and simplifying.
If any of you have caught, i turned 7/5 into a mixed then back to an improper. My mistake, too lazy to fix because i can take half a minute to write this explaining instead of taking a half hour and doing this whole thing again.
7 x 4 is 28
8 x 5 is 40
28/40 ÷ 2 = 12/20
12/20 ÷ 2 = 6/10
6/10 ÷ 2 = 3/5.

Hmmmmmmmm
the answers are different for both strategies. I guess it DOES make a difference if you swap.

2 2/3 x 4 1/2=
Enlarged to view writing.

Question 1

1. What strategies needed?
The strategy I used was multiplication, division, and ratio tables when I fixed my work.

2. and 3.

4.

5. Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.

Question 2
1. 2/3 + 1/4 + 2/5 =
for question 1 i would use clocks. 2/3 in clocks 20 min, 1/4 in clocks 15 min, and 2/5 in clocks is 24 min. now i add 20+15+24=59 min.

2. 6/5 - 11/10=
For question 2 i would use money. 5/5 in money is 100 cents i added another 20 cents because it would be 6/5. 10/10 in money is 100 cents I added another 10 cents so it can be 11/10 so now 11/10 is 110 cents and 6/5 is 120. Now I add 110+120=230 or in money 4 dollars and 50 cents.

3. 3/5 + 2/7 =
for question 3 it is the double number line below

4. 1/6/+1/9 =
i did nothing

5. 5/6 - 1/4 =
For question 5 I would use clocks. 5/6 is 50 min because 1/6 is 10 min. 1/4 is 15 min so now I add 10+50=60 witch is 1 hour.

6. 3 3/5 - 1 4/5 =
For question 6 I would use money because 3 wholes is is three dollars and 1 whole is one dollar. 3/5 is 60 cents and 4/5 is 80 cents. So now i add 60+80=140 in money that is 2 dollars and 20 cent and now add 1+3+2=5 dollars so now it equals 5 dollars and 20 cents.

David's 2nd Growing Post

Question One:

1. What strategies were needed?
- I just used a large ratio table for this test, but im sure you could use more.

2. How did you use these strategies?
- With a ratio table, whatever you did to one side of it, you had to do to the other to keep it equal. So i put the total amount of the package, shreddies, pretzels, and peanuts, and tried to get the total amount to the correct total. Finding the unit fraction or getting the nuimber to 1 would be a pretty good place to start because once you have 1, you can do anyhting to it and find out easily like 1 x 29348579038570980975279 = 29348579038570980975279.

3. Or How could you have used these strategies.
- Like i said before you could have used more, but i took the easy path and just made a ratio table to answer it. Also because im not so sure about how to do it with clocks, money, or a double numberline. The numbers they gave us weren't that friendly for clocks, or money, and a double numberline gets confusing for this type of question. Its possible but requires to much thinking so i used the plain old ratio table.

4. How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack Mix?
Use a ratio table.

-As you can see from that ratio table, I put down was 12 was first since I already knew from what i did on the test. Then i divided 12 by 2 to get 6 cups of snack mix and divided the $18 i have over there by 2 also to keep it equivalent.

5. Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.

A new size would be 18, and i got that by adding the 6 cups and 12 cups i had on that chart. Another one would be 24 which i got by multiplying 12 by 2. And the third would be 3 which i got by dividing 6 cups by 2.

1. What strategies were needed?
- You could of used Ratio Tables, Clocks, Money and a Double Number Line.

2. How did you use these strategies?
- Well I only used the ratio table strategy along with some division and multiplication but I didn't really use the clock, money and number line strategy.

3. Or How could you of used these strategies
- I could of used the Number Line strategy seeing as it would make more sense than using clocks and money because some of the numbers wouldn't go into it so I could of used the Number Line strategy but I probably wasn't thinking of using it because ratio tables were pretty good for answering most of these questions.

What strategies were used?

I used multiplication, division and i used a ratio table.

How did you use the strategies?

I used multiplication and division with the ratio table to figure out the new size containers.

Or how could you have used these strategies?

I just stuck with the ratio table because i thought it was easier then doing clock and money.

Jonah's Second Growing Post

Question 1

1. What strategies were needed?
- There were lots of strategies that I could of used like a ratio table, a clock, a number line, and money. With those strategies you could divide, subtract, add, and multiply.

2. How did you use these strategies?
- I first used money but that didn't work out. So I used a ratio table and I added, divided, and multiplied.

3. Or How could you of used these strategies?
- With money I don't think it would work because some of the numbers wouldn't fit well with the strategy. Clocks wouldn't work out too because there aren't many fractions to work with and that the numbers don't really fit well with the numbers that work well with a clock. A ratio table would work better because it shows that what you do on one side with the number or fraction you do the same thing one the other side with the number or fraction.

4. How could you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack Mix? Use a ratio table.
5. Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes

Derricks 2nd Growing Post

1. What strategies were needed?

-Strategies that were needed were mulitpilication, a ratio table, and divsion.

2.How did you use these strategies?

-First I drew a ratio table and labelled it money and cups. Then I used the ratio table to find the size of cups of snack mix and how much money the snack mixes cost. Then I divided the answer for 1/2 cup of snack mix, and multiply the answers for 12 cups of snack mix.

3.Or How could you of used these strategies.

-I multiplied the 2 2/5 until I got to 12. Then multiply the money by how much you multiplied to get 12. To get 1/2 divide the money and the 12 cups by 24.

4.How would you figure out the price of a 6 cup bag of Betty's Snack mix?

5. Find 3 other values (amounts of Snack Mix) that could be solved using the same ratio table. Find the $$ of your new container sizes.
